TESDA bags second award for gender sensitivity

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority was given its second Philippine Commission on Women GADTimpala Bronze Award in 5 years for its Sari-sari Store Training and Access to Resources (STAR) Program, which it implements with Coca-Cola Philippines.

“This training program shows our commitment to reach all sectors of the society, giving everybody a chance to provide a better life for their families and to actively contribute to the economy,” according to TESDA Director General, Secretary Isidro S. Lapeña.

The PCW GADTimpala Bronze Award for Outstanding Gender Responsive Government Women-Focused Program was received on behalf of TESDA by Deputy Director General for Partnerships and Linkages, Rebecca J. Calzado, during a ceremony held last August 14 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.

The STAR Program is a convergence woman economic empowerment (WEE) program of TESDA and Coca-Cola Philippines that aims to provide access to skills training, resources and peer mentoring to 200,000 women sari-sari store and carinderia owners and operators all over the country by 2020. To date, about 150,000 women have already graduated from the program.

“We are grateful that our innovativeness and gender-responsiveness to contribute to gender equality and women’s empowerment have been once again recognized,” Calzado said during her acceptance speech.

TESDA is one of the eight agencies that successfully met the rigorous and thorough criteria of PCW’s validation process for the 2019 award.  It was in 2014 when TESDA first won its GADTimpala Bronze Award for its gender-responsive programs offered at the TESDA Women’s Center in Taguig City and other gender and development (GAD) initiatives.

The STAR program is part of the Coca-Cola Company's 5by20 Program which seeks to economically empower five million women globally within its value chain by 2020.
